How to get there

AGRIBUSINESS

There are plenty of challenges and opportunities for agribusiness executives and professionals in Brazil. This sector represents 25% of Brazilian GDP. It is responsible for one third of the country jobs and its economic potential increases year by year. Not by chance, Brazil is respected as one of the world biggest agricultural frontiers.
While some nations are facing the depletion of agricultural areas and difficulties to restock food, Brazil gains attention due to its investment in top knotch agricultural management and its potential for expansion. There are 380 million hectares yet to be explored, according to Agricultural Ministry figures. It also has the largest hydric potential on earth, equivalent to almost 11% of worldwide fresh water.

Brazilian agribusiness has proven over the years to be a success due to its track record in precision agriculture and now under economic stability.

Meanwhile, sustainable development is not only and ideal anymore; it has become reality. High productivity rates coexist with leading-edge in technology, use of clean sources of energy and natural resources conservation, which create the ideal conditions for a competitive production.

World trade increased 17.6% in 2008, hitting US$ 12.6 trillion. Of this total, US$ 853.2 billion came from agricultural production. In this scenario, Brazilian agribusiness set in motion US$ 58.36 billion – 6.8% of international trade -, establishing a reputation as one of the most promising commodity powers in the sector.

This whole process is coordinated by high skilled professionals, able to deal with challenges. They are composed of entrepreneurs, quick in decision making, flexible, and always updated to deal with high precision production. They are resilient to market pressure and to exchange rates and weather oscillations. Also, they are specialists in finance and agriculture technology, according to Jeffrey Abrahams.

The demand for specialists is intensive – from top management positions in production, finance, industrial production, HR and trading. For these strategic positions, management expertise is imperative, competencies to innovate are essential features and - most important - interpersonal leadership skills are a must. It is necessary to know the most modern practices and tools regarding management, pesticide management, fertilizer management, seed varieties, mechanization, logistics, as well as abilities to promote profitable commercialisation. Other important distinctions are knowledge of quality and sustainability programs, as well as an attentive look to questions addressing the environment. Brazil is a global leader in precision agriculture.

There is high demand for skilled and prepared professionals, placing salaries at higher than normal levels. Talents acquisition in Brazil is high.
Brazilian environment appreciates a mix of competencies and experiences, and different generations working together has been a challenge, explains Abrahams. It is vital to mix older professionals’ experience with younger professionals that offer vitality and enthusiasm. And when provided with modern management techniques, they become winners. Systemic vision, focus on results, team work, foreign languages and people management, with motivating leaderships, are other highly demanded competencies.

In this fertile, optimistic and qualified context, Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) calculate that Brazilian agriculture sector will have the world´s highest growth by 2019, increasing more than 40%. For this reason, it is important to zoom in and be attentive to this segment.
We have worked in this activity for more than 25 years and we had never seen such a significant boom in the past years. The activity demands high resiliency, because it deals with many factors beyond control, such as weather conditions and exchange rates. It also demands above average physical condition to cope with constant travel around the country.
Brazil is today one of the best countries in respecting biodiversity, great conditions for worldwide food supply, along with the best world platform for clean energy sources.
